The free content sites (free to perusers of the site) pay the producers for their product. Probably a bulk low rate for somewhat older stuff. The free sites then make their money from advertisers. Most of the free sites have many pop ops, advertising, etc. I guess if you want the best quality new photos and videos, with no interruption, then you pay the going rate. If you can put up with the interference, then you go to the free sites. Since you were in the business you probably understand this better than most.
