(stogie bear @ Jul. 19 2008,22:21) €˜Eddie the Eagle€™ when he became Britain€™s first and only ski jumper to reach the Olympic Games in 1988...

Ian Botham turning around the Ashes for England in 1981

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean winning gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics

Dennis Taylor winning the 1985 World Snooker Championship final

George Best scoring six goals for Man Utd against Northampton in 1970

Gordon Banks' save against Pele at the 1970 World Cup

Mary Peters winning gold in the pentathlon at the 1972 Summer Olympics

Duncan Goodhew winning 100 m breaststroke gold at the 1980 Summer Olympics

Daley Thompson retaining the decathlon gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics

There were a few more but these were my favourites...

(Naang Faa @ Jul. 19 2008,21:01) But most memorable for me,was this... Marko Tardelli's face
after scoring in the '82 World Cup Final..
Fantastic..Showed exactly what that meant to him!!
                                                                                      x
thanks for digging that back, Naang!

I could not see it...I was in the Lybian desert working

Well for me personally back in 2001 at a practice session of the Melbourne F1 GP , i saw two cars tangle and one of them crashed into the wall 6 feet infront of me , my heart was racing more than i could ever have imagined and we took home a piece of formula 1 fiberglass just to remember it .

Still i must say Australia 2 winning the America's cup really kicked my nation into total independance in retrospect . Thats my vote .

Good call MM, winning the America's Cup was a big deal here in Australia, it unified the country in a way no other event has ever done.

But for sheer personal courage, Japanese gymnast Shun Fujimoto's effort to win gold at the 76 Olympics in Montreal can't be beaten:

Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

                (seamus @ Jul. 19 2008,14:23) Big Mick, watching Cork-Galway as I type.
                59 minutes gone
                Cor 0-18 Gal 2-09

Glad I come from the best hurling county of all time, go the rebels
good win today with only 14 men. However, I reckon it's between Kilkenny and Tipp this year - Cork not consistent enough
                No honey, no money!!
