  • Homosexual Persecution in Africa...

This morning a former work colleague who is aware of my proclivities called me for some help. She (my ex colleague) is a volounteer at a centre for victims of abuse, be that racial, sexual or religious. All the attendees at the centre have suffered from physical or mental abuse, usually both and are generally speaking in a pretty bad way.

The reason for my call was that a young Ugandan who was what I suppose we would categorise as a femboy had been brought in by Social Services having turned up at Heathrow claiming asylum. His body bore the marks of considerable beatings and several dozen burns that had been identified as evidence of systematic torture. My involvement was purely to provide a contact number for a charity that could be of more direct help.

This made me think and I did some research and came up with the following:

In Uganda and several other African countries it is belived that homosexual activity is a curse and an abomination, the authorities there would not be amenable to the arguments sometimes put by BMs that its not gay if you do it with Ladyboys - as far as they are concerned if both parties have a penis than it comes under the remit of this belief. The Ugandan government is currently seeking to pass a law which provides for the death penalty to be levied on anyone proven to be gay (this also covers lesbian and transgender behaviour). This is enthusiastically backed by several "Christian" organisations who hold prayer meetings where the congregation is exhorted to root out and kill all sodomites.

This attitude taps into a prevelant attitude in the sub saharan belt of Africa that says that to remove the curse of a homosexual from a family the offender should be sacrificed - or as we might say murdered! There are no figures as to how many real or suspected gays have been killed by their families. Other of course than the expected one that not a single prosecution for murder has ever been made against the perpetrators of this cull of "abominations".

So why should we care? Well we BMs could technically be put to death if we visited those countries in Africa - countries which we are currently supporting with our tax pounds and dollars in foreign aid. Needless to say the response of the UK, EU and US governments to this unofficial and soon to be official bloodletting has been the usual damp handed fudge that we all know so well. Is it not time that our governments that we elect actually made a few demands of the recipients of all these handouts - the first of which being that money from civilised countries only goes to countries that behave in a civilised fashion. It might also be a step forward if the Church that "guardian of our morals" stood up to be counted and said that this is wrong.

My friend actually sent me a picture of the Ugandan boy (which I have no intention of posting) and he looked like he had been to Hell. Feeling totally unable to make any useful difference to what is happening I thought I would post this and see what comments come my way.

A recent case in Malawi is on point. Homosexuality is frowned uponl there. A gay couple openly got engaged and announced their marriage. Result ? Arrest, jail, pending sentence. After the UN Sec Gen was in Malawi last week they were pardoned. However, the (female) Minister clearly stated in a BBC interview that if they did it again, they would be arrested again...clearly showing that the pardon was a gesture rather than a change of heart.

The point being that Gay marriage is against the moral code in many African countries. (Western ones too, although you're unlikely to get arrested for it..) And they don't seem to be phased by outside Western opinion on the matter.

I guess financial pressure may help but in the long run it will require a change in the psyche of the individual societies. These things cannot be forced from the outside. In fact that can be counter-productive in many ways.

Having said that, beatings and abuse for any reason are just not on

One might inquire at http://www.gayrightsuganda.org/ on how they might best contribute to change in Uganda. Another organization is http://www.astraeafoundation.org/ which funnels money to gay rights activist groups in Uganda.

Here is an article detailing some of the developments in Uganda and the anti-gay bill which has met with some international resistance. Some US missionaries copped some flack for stirring up hate and fear. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/04/wo.../04uganda.html

For most of us, best we can probably do is be more active in getting the word out, being unafraid to promote public opinion in a direction that provides resistance to such injustices, such inhumanity.

What really pisses me off is these FUCKING CHRISTIAN BASTARDS going down to those countries and promoting hatred, violence and intolerance towards sexual minorities. As if things weren't bad enough, these psycho closet cases, and that's what they are, have to go and make life even harder for these people, grrrrrrr. I don't believe in hell, but if there is a hell, I hope there is a specially horrible corner of it reserved for these fucking vile pieces of shit.
            I fucking hate Christian fundamentalists.

(I wasn't sure about the Amen smiley!)

Religious people will be the death of me! They are just empty, lonely, hateful people with a sadistic compulsion to destroy humanity.

Africa hasn't got a hope (in hell) of making life more tolerable for 'sexual misfits' if these people are allowed to infest their continent.

                Excellent comments.

If any of you get the cable station "Current TV" (partially owned by Al Gore) they have a generally excellent documentary series called Vanguard that just featured an episode about white Christian fundamentalists that are promoting the gay-hate agenda to Ugandan churches. Very disturbing stuff... they can't sell their religious hatred and bigotry here so they find a less-educated audience that they can bamboozle half-way across the world.

More people have been killed "in the name of God" than from many forms of natural causes!

Thanks for your comments guys, Deepthroat's point about fundamentalists from the US and Europe (including ) peddling their hate in Africa where they get at the very least official indifference is one of the most disturbing issues for those of us lucky enough to live in tolerant societies.

There is I suspect a real danger of these so called Christians becoming ever more militant. Hardly an interview goes by with one of these morons when they are hauled over the coals for bigotry without them claiming "You wouldn't do this if we were Moslems". The unspoken suggestion being that if they (the Christian fundamentalists) went in for mass terrorism they would be better treated.

While I deplore the behaviour of the fundamentalists I do agree with Bumpa Sticka ( almost a first) if you go out of your way to break your local laws sooner or later you are going to get arrested. A number of countries, notably in the Middle East only get upset if you do things in public and frighten the camels, as it were. It might be hypocrisy but if the choice is between having two adjoining rooms at the Crown Plaza in Dubai and three months in the local nick then I know which I'd choose.

What intrigues me is why these people are so opposed to gay behaviour. Its hardly the sort of thing that is going to catch on among the disinclined and lets face it most of we BMs are pretty selective as to who we take up with. The only reason I can come to is that this behaviour indicates a degree of independence of thought and that is the one thing that no religion can survive.

Not speaking for the foreign fundamentalists here, but as I said before, this is an African cultural theme. So any answers would have to go beyond strict religion I imagine.

GDS is quite right about the African cultural element, so to move the discussion on: if this is an African thing why are some of our home grown fundamentalists giving actual or tacit support to this behaviour?

I would contend that religion is ultimately about power over other people and that this whole thing is just another aspect of this desire for power. If a minority group is identified as the cause of a given set of problems then a surprising number of people will go along with this rather than stand up and ask questions.

By targetting one particular group it takes the general public's eye off the rest of the picture - literally blinding them by hate. Channel 4 news in the UK had an interview with the Chaplin of Kampala University who along with the rest of his congregation sport badges with the slogan "sodomy kills". When asked whether this was a reference to HIV / AIDS he said no it meant that by practising this "abomination" the birth rate would fall thus allowing Moslems to fill the void.

So there we go homosexual sex is a Moslem plot to take over the world! I assume it is a matter of time before the Chaplin realises that Climate Change is also due to these practices along with the credit crunch.

I think for the sake of clarity and understanding, it's important not to confuse different issues or 'make an amalgamation' as the French say.

Fundamentalists support it because they too agree it is an abomination...based on their view of the Bible. Some African churchmen will quote the same source...others (like the female Minister in Malawi) will refer to 'culture'...the Ugandan chaplin may quote the Muslim issue if that is an issue that pertains to his 'world'..

Different people will find different ways to express the same view, or at least couch that view in reference to whatever works for them.

It is interesting to note that in the US, there is quite a bit of 'gay activity' among Black men...(bi men ?) but this is all done on the 'down low'...hidden, never openly acknowledged...because it goes against Black culture, even among African Americans, several generations removed form the African continent. Again, culture.

This is deep rooted within their own culture and history. It hasn't been caused by outsiders.

Fair point - I have a couple of gay friends who are black british, both third generation in the UK and they are very shy about being openly gay aroind their own ethnic grouping. To be fair I don't believe they have ever been subjected to any form of prejudice from friends or family but being gay is just not a "black" thing.

Robert Anton Wilson once wrote that people will use any facts available to prove their own point of view and that diametrically opposed viewpoints can and will use the same facts to prove their view of the world is the right one.

I think that the "reasons" given for the persecution of gay people, other races or cultures are an absolute confirmation of this precept and bears out, in my view another of RAW's comments that the only philosophy worth having can be summed up in the phrase "Think for Yourself, Schmuck!!"

That reminds me of the motto of the Theosophical Society : :There is no Religion higher than truth".

Anyway, back to your original point, I think International pressure can have an impact on attitudes in Africa, but it's a long hard road and 'democracy', good government and stamping out corruption are easier to sell because they make sense to most people in the end. The gay issue, being a cultural one, will take longer no doubt. But the abuses can be attacked under the general human rights umbrella.

You could add anything at the end of the above snippet.

My opinion is that it is not even worth thinking about an answer.

Power, respect, wealth... in Africa people get none of these by supporting gays.

Did you notice that half of the people have an intelligence that is *gasp* below average?
