  • Alcohol Sales

Thailand's Cabinet on Tuesday approved in principle a bill to control alcohol consumption and ban alcohol advertisements, an official said.

The draft law would prohibit the sale of alcohol near temples, schools and student dormitories, and also ban alcohol consumption in government premises and hospitals.

The bill would also ban the advertising of alcohol on clothing and decorations. Anyone wearing a T-Shirt promoting alcohol would be subject to a 1000 Baht Fine.

Alcohol would only be available for sale in stores between 10am and 2pm and 5pm and 8pm, this would also affect Hotel Mini-Bars which would either have to install a timer to restrict access or remove all alcoholic drinks.

Flights in to Thailand or flying over Thai airspace would also have to restrict the sale of alcohol to the listed hours. In Addition Tiger Air of Singapore would not be able to enter Thai airspace since its name could be seen as a promotion of Tiger Beer.

The new law will take affect on April 1st 2007

This is dumb in my opinion. In Texas they don't let you buy liquor on Sundays... presumably worrying about someone going to church drunk?
I guess intoxicated in other things are ok .

Just seen a comment from Tiger Air protesting about the ban and stating they are looking at plans to cover the tails with brown paper bags when flying in/out of Thailand.

but if it WERE/is true, would anyone really be surprised?
