  • How big is yours?

    A hard drive (HDD) is the device used to store large amounts of digital information in computers, iPods and games consoles such as the Xbox, etc. It consists of a motor, spindle, platters, read/write heads and other stuff...

    A song usually takes up about 3 or 4 megabytes. A movie is usually compressed to about 700 megabytes (so it can fit on to a CD.) DVD movies usually have about 4.3 gigabytes of various files on them.

    Blank DVDs can carry almost 5 gigabytes of information and some types of blank DVDs can do double that.

    In a few years we'll all have HDVD or 'Blue Ray' players which carry up to 30 gigabytes of date on one disk...

    But now it has been revealed that a single hard drive with four terabytes of storage (4TB or 4,000 gigabytes) could be a reality by 2011, thanks to a nanotechnology breakthrough by Japanese firm Hitachi.

    The company has successfully managed to shrink the read-write head of a hard drive to two thousands times smaller than the width of a human hair.

    Hitachi said the advance would fuel the "terabyte era", with a 4TB drive able to hold more than a million songs. Hello Napster!!!

    The biggest hard drive at the moment is one terabyte but they are bloody expensive.

    So - how big is yours?

    The ones that come in your laptop or computer may be filling up if you download videos and lots of music.

    The one in my laptop is 120 gigabytes... which is way to little so I have 3 USB hard drives plugged in to my computer each one of which is another 500 gigabytes...

    I'll have to buy a new one soon as the third one is now over half full.

    Bring on the 4 terabyte drives NOW!!! I don't want to wait another four years!

    that's 'cos they're full of porn methinks...

    I wouldn't buy one of those ever, imagine the nightmare when it starts failing? It'd be ok for NASA to back up data onto but I can't see any other use for a 4TB drive, imagine how slow it would be, then how long a defrag would take.

    Better of having a rack of smaller ones imo, I have a 250GB drive which only has 43GB of data on it so it's not a big worry to me yet, but I would rather have 2x120GB running in RAID

    Anyway...

    Bring it on you say?

      Just ordered a 320 GB external hard drive that works on a network router/hub. Then any computer on the network can access it with the proper software. If you have a wireless network, you have an ideal storage solution. Bigger drives will be available soon!

      Was on sale for $99.00 Canadian from Future Shop (kind of like Circuit City in the USA).

      Comstar 3.5" external 320GB HDD with RJ-45 plus USB 2.0 feature is the first external network and USB 2.0 drive. It combines multiple unit into a single virtual disc. Easy to install and use, unit appears as a local drive on each PC - making it the perfect centralized multimedia storage centre for your home or small business.

      Will be getting it in a week. I will report back on how it works later.

        1 million songs. suppose they're short - 2 minutes. if you sleep 8 hours a day and listen to music the other 16, that's going to take 5.8 years to listen to. without listening to any of the other crap that comes out during that 5.8 years. like the remixes.
        Retired the top 12.  Need a new dirty dozen.

        Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon.  Is it possible to find 5 more?  Until then, GGs:  Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

          The one I'm on now is an old desktop with about 8 gig.

          But a buddy of mine just gave me his old laptop today and think it has 100 gig.

            i have 2 usb external hd for my laptop- this new drive looks great..
            the problem besides space is the slow transfer rate- my newer drive has firewire 2 but only macs have this port at the moment. You get 800meg transfer rates opposed to 400 with usb/firwire 1.

            the other downfall as well as space with current hd is the portability with all the cables etc. i know western digital launched a passport drive but it is only has 250gigs and runs at 53rpms.

            this looks like the perfect solution for the laptop if it had more storage. All you need is the usb cable- no adaptor

                        Ok, have been using this drive for a couple of days now. Sets up ok, but transfer rate is a bit slow on a 54G wireless router. I like the idea it can be shared on the network, but the faster protocols may be better.

                        Handy to have as the extra storage does not have to be directly attached by USB or firewire to my laptop.

                        Would recommend this, but performance is probably better with faster wireless protocol. Also if you are using the old wireless b protocol it isn't recommended as data loss can occur.

                          laptop1 = 250GB

                          laptop2 = 50GB

                          laptop3 = 60GB

                          desktop 1 = 160GB

                          desktop 2 = 320 GB

                          also have two 260GB and 500GB external USB 2.0 drives

                          am thinking about buying NAS too so I can have a couple of TB and share it among all my computers on my home network

                          I need all the storage for recording TV and copying all my DVDs to make available to my Media center setup

                          Can never have too much storage and getting cheaper all the time
                          No honey, no money!!

                            It's insane what I have .... across 4 Computers and 2 multimedia Dream Boxes and 5 external USB drives... everything networked together I have over 3.5 TB in my home office. My home network is connected directly to the internet backbone via a private microwave link to our Data center that gives me 30Mbit up/down speed.
