  • Torrent user/pros...questions for you!

I am concerned about potential spyware/bugs/and general garbage that comes with torrent downloads. Any suggestions? Anyone have big problems?

Wow... what a can of worms! The answer to this could be several pages long. What do you download and where do you download from?

http://www.uknova.com/ <<< For new and old British TV programs that aren't available on DVD etc. You'lll have to sign up and they are strict on 'ratios' and sharing. Every file is good and I haven't ever had a problem here.

http://www2.digitaldistractions.org:8080/torrents2.php <<< Canadian site features excellent quality TV shows and is 100% safe. If you like cooking shows and British TV then there is some excellent materiel here.

http://www.torrentspy.com/default.asp <<< Mainstream site with loads of good stuff but loads of fakes and spyware as well. But each torrent file has its' own private forum and you can quickly find out if something is good or not. I have downloaded hundreds of movies from here and they all play fine and most are master copies. Obviously the new ones like 'King Kong' will NOT be master copies. Beware of the 'Applications' section as there is plenty of spyware and other crap here. Big porno section!

Basically u want to grab your torrents from sites which allow comments from thoose who download them ,, that way you can read others comments and get a general idea  on the integrity and quality of what you are downloading. If you are into movies you can also find sites dedicated to discussing the quality of movies sites like

      http://www.vcdquality.com/

Two of my favorite torrent sites are

      http://www.ilovetorrents.com/index.php for movie rips and

http://empornium.us/index.php which is the king of porn torrent sites.

As Stogie said "big can of worms"
One thing to watch out for is anything you download that plays in Windows Media Player and that asks you to install a license or some such.

If you ever see a dialog pop up asking your permission to do anything, CLOSE MEDIA PLAYER.
do not hit "NO" and certainly don't hit "YES" just quit close (or kill) the application.

        I use torrentspy.com or torrentreactor.net
but use them with firefox not IE, Torrentreactor can have some nasty pop-unders on their website.

And www.empornium.us is the King of Porn - very active shemale section.

          cool.
obviously i am a novice with this technology.
i was under the impression it was mainly for digitized images/videos (mainly porn and the like) and did not realize that people have first run mainstream movies as well. Not a surprise but just did not know this technology was being used for the purpose.

so the gist of what i got was
use a site with forums and comments section so that you can filter bogus shit
          use firefox
don't accept messages such has registration and the like....
          thanks for the help.

          one more question:
give that this stuff is mainly copyrighted....what are the chances of someone coming along and suing my ass off? :P

If your downloading any torrents for personal use only and not trying to distribute pirated movie , games , music etc the chances of being sued are extremely unlikely .

I have heard about people being warned by their ISP's about doing it though , apparently the ISP has been contacted by whomever has the copyright , and they pass a warning along .Whether an ISP would ban a customer for continually disregarding warnings i am unsure . Then there are plenty of ISP's around these days so its not to hard to find a new one if this did happen .

Some downloads are slow , some are quick all depends on how many seeds are active and also to a lesser extent the location of peers and seeds throughout the net and what speeds they are uploading at .

If you have a ratio of about 1 seed for every 2 peers and some of thoose seeds have T1 pipes and are able to get to you fairly cleanly without too much packet loss , you should find your torrent come down with a speed close to maximum .

Give it time. A large file like a movie will start off slow and get increasingly faster as time goes on. Don't get me started on port forwarding etc!

I recommend BitComet as your free torrent program.

I recently started using BitTorrent so I could download and watch the Middle Sex documentary.  I tried Azureaus, BitComet, and finally settled on µTorrent as my client (Stogie and others: I recommend you consider trying this, a small stand-alone program that requires no installation and will not affect your BitComet settings unless you allow it to become the default .torrent handler, which it will ask before doing).  FAQs and forums are available on each client's web site that will help with firewall settings, anti-virus sensitivities, and optimization.  But I had problems with all of them stopping after no more than a few hours and blocking my Internet access, sometimes with error message "An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer space or because a queue was full".  I eventually found the cause to be a disk recovery utility I use, Norton GoBack.  For anyone interested in details, my troubleshooting report can be read at:

I appreciate being made aware of the "empornium.us" torrent site by monkeyman's post.  I just joined and quickly downloaded "Two Movies from LADY BOY 69", a relatively small (170MB) download containing Areeya and Mint videos.  Anybody doubting that Mint is well hung should watch this!

                      Regards, Joe

Monkeyman, I will be happy to buy you a beer if the opportunity ever presents itself.  But first I have to pay the 330 Euros bill my ISP just informed be about.  I had a 5GB monthly plan which I thought I had changed to flat rate last month, but due to typical German bureaucracy the change does not actually take effect until 9 January.  Ironically, my ISP calls themselves "freenet"...
