I agree... with that much hot air in one place I'll be surprised if the earth doesn't fly straight into the sun and save us all the bother of this guesswork!

i call it the great carbon cycle. yes millions of yeas ago the continent of australia was mainly rain forrest those trees sucked carbon from the air to grow.(yup plants need carbon to grow). we are mearly digging the carbon up and burning it, putting it back were it once was, in the atmosphere.
Fucking al gore is a cunt who along with his green mates should be toed onto an island and left to live a carbon neutral life style. how long will they last i hear you say? maybe six months before there back to air con and cold beer. fucking hipocritical cock sucking cunts

                  STEWART !!!!

Get a load of this from the Copenhagen Post:

                  (snippet below)
Ice returns as Greenland temps plummet
                  16.01.2008

Residents insist Greenland's freezing temperatures don't mean global warming has been called off

While the rest of Europe is debating the prospects of global warming during an unseasonably mild winter, a brutal cold snap is raging across the semi-autonomous nation of Greenland.

On Disko Bay in western Greenland, where a number of prominent world leaders have visited in recent years to get a first-hand impression of climate change, temperatures have dropped so drastically that the water has frozen over for the first time in a decade.

'The ice is up to 50cm thick,' said Henrik Matthiesen, an employee at Denmark's Meteorological Institute who has also sailed the Greenlandic coastline for the Royal Arctic Line. 'We've had loads of northerly winds since Christmas which has made the area miserably cold.'

Matthiesen suggested the cold weather marked a return to the frigid temperatures common a decade ago.

Gordon Brown charters a 747-400 to take a few people to china. Where does he offset his carbon?

                      Global temperatures 'to decrease'

                      BBC today:

Global temperatures this year will be lower than in 2007 due to the cooling effect of the La Nina current in the Pacific, UN meteorologists have said.

The World Meteorological Organisation's secretary-general, Michel Jarraud, told the BBC it was likely that La Nina would continue into the summer.

This would mean global temperatures have not risen since 1998, prompting some to question climate change theory.

But experts have also forecast a record high temperature within five years.

                      'Variability'

La Nina and El Nino are two great natural Pacific currents whose effects are so huge they resonate round the world.

El Nino warms the planet when it happens, La Nina cools it. This year, the Pacific is in the grip of a powerful La Nina.

It has contributed to torrential rains in Australia and to some of the coldest temperatures in memory in snow-bound parts of China.

                      LA NINA KEY FACTS
La Nina 2008 Forecast (Source: UK Met Office Hadley Centre)
La Nina translates from the Spanish as "The Child Girl"
Refers to the extensive cooling of the central and eastern Pacific
Increased sea temperatures on the western side of the Pacific means the atmosphere has more energy and frequency of heavy rain and thunderstorms is increased
Typically lasts for up to 12 months and generally less damaging event than the stronger El Nino

Mr Jarraud told the BBC that the effect was likely to continue into the summer, depressing temperatures globally by a fraction of a degree.

This would mean that temperatures have not risen globally since 1998 when El Nino warmed the world.

A minority of scientists question whether this means global warming has peaked and the earth has proved more resilient to greenhouse gases than predicted.

But Mr Jarraud insisted this was not the case and noted that 1998 temperatures would still be well above average for the century.

"When you look at climate change you should not look at any particular year," he said. "You should look at trends over a pretty long period and the trend of temperature globally is still very much indicative of warming."

"La Nina is part of what we call 'variability'. There has always been and there will always be cooler and warmer years, but what is important for climate change is that the trend is up."

Experts at the UK Met Office's Hadley Centre for forecasting in Exeter said the world could expect another record temperature within five years or less, probably associated with another episode of El Nino.

The Climate Change brigade keep saying that the 1990's was the warmest decade of the modern era.

The fact is that the 1930's was the warmest decade. The warming and cooling of the planet is cyclical depending on numerous factors.

One article for the BBC , so what does this prove. Nothing. These things are not measured in months and the IPCC report makes this clear

Even the local schoolkids know that on average the temperature is going up....

want to put some money on it...

I didn't read the bbc article as anti-global warming. It made it quite clear that the overall trend is up, and there are always short-term variations caused by things like La Nina

TerryW - what are these "various factors", and have you checked whether they have been analysed and commented on by the thousands of scientists involved in the IPCC report?

The BBC article is back one page. Flip to page 2... KL posted it

The problem is that there is so much news hype that the slightest change is put down to some massive wrong doing on one side or the other....You can also take the other news that its far much worse than we even think ( published today).

In the cold light of day the global warming situation has always been a set range of probablities.. like A- weather, B- Gulf stream, C The ice caps, D the upper atmosphere. Some are more probable than others
The temperature is going up and in ten years time i would bet good money that the average will be higher than now...

The BBC news is hardly the place for factual science. Any old tripe is put out to pad the airwaves as a rule. What a joke

The main factors affecting the planets climate are human activity, the El Nino effect, the level of sunspot activity and volcanic activity.

The last two tend to keep the planet cooler. They are currently going through a low activity phase. The El Nino effect is still not fully understood by scientists.

Human activity is currently the main factor. For example, although several countires in Northern Europe are increasing their areas of forest, the de-forestation of large areas of the tropics is reducing the world's capabilty to reduce the level of carbon in the atmosphere.

However, not everything is doom and gloom. The level of pollution in the UK has substantially reduced during the past 15 years due to the introduction of emission and pollution controls on cars and industry. Other European countries have introduced similar controls.

What people need to be wary of is Government use of the Climate Change lobby to introduce so called Green taxes which end up being used for other purposes.
