  • Catholic Church Scandal...

    Article is here...

After a nine-year investigation, a commission published a damning report Wednesday on decades of rapes, humiliation and beatings at Catholic Church-run reform schools for Ireland's castaway children.

The 2,600-page report painted the most detailed and damning portrait yet of church-administered abuse in a country grown weary of revelations about child molestation by priests.

The investigation of the tax-supported schools uncovered previously secret Vatican records that demonstrated church knowledge of pedophiles in their ranks all the way back to the 1930s.

Wednesday's five-volume report on the probe €” which was resisted by Catholic religious orders €” concluded that church officials shielded their orders' pedophiles from arrest amid a culture of self-serving secrecy.

"A climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and all those run for boys. Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from," Ireland's Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse concluded.

Victims of the abuse, who are now in their 50s to 80s, lobbied long and hard for an official investigation. They say that for all its incredible detail, the report doesn't nail down what really matters €” the names of their abusers.

"I do genuinely believe that it would have been a further step towards our healing if our abusers had been named and shamed," said Christine Buckley, 62, who spent the first 18 years of her life in a Dublin orphanage where children were forced to manufacture rosaries €” and were humiliated, beaten and raped whether they achieved their quota or not.

The Catholic religious orders that ran more than 50 workhouse-style reform schools from the late 19th century until the mid-1990s offered public words of apology, shame and regret Wednesday. But when questioned, their leaders indicated they would continue to protect the identities of clergy accused of abuse €” men and women who were never reported to police, and were instead permitted to change jobs and keep harming children.

The Christian Brothers, which ran several boys' institutions deemed to have harbored serial child molesters and sadists on their staff, insisted it had cooperated fully with the probe. The order successfully sued the commission in 2004 to keep the identities of all of its members, dead or alive, unnamed in the report. No real names, whether of victims or perpetrators, appear in the final document.

The Christian Brothers' leader in Ireland, Brother Kevin Mullan, said the organization had been right to keep names secret because "perhaps we had doubts about some of the allegations."

"But on the other hand, I'd have to say that at this stage, we have no interest in protecting people who were perpetrators of abuse," Mullan said, vowing to "cooperate fully with any investigation or any civil authority seeking to explore those matters."

Buckley, who said she was abused at an orphanage run by the Sisters of Mercy, which ran several refuges for girls where the report documented chronic brutality, said the religious orders for years branded the victims as money-seeking liars €” and were incapable of admitting their guilt today.

She criticized Mullan for suggesting that "today, having read the report, he doesn't mind if the abusers are named and shamed. Isn't that a little bit late for us?"

The report found that molestation and rape were "endemic" in boys' facilities, chiefly run by the Christian Brothers order, and supervisors pursued policies that increased the danger. Girls supervised by orders of nuns, chiefly the Sisters of Mercy, suffered much less sexual abuse but frequent assaults and humiliation designed to make them feel worthless.

"In some schools a high level of ritualized beating was routine. ... Girls were struck with implements designed to maximize pain and were struck on all parts of the body," the report said. "Personal and family denigration was widespread."

Ireland's myriad religious orders, much like their mother church, have been devastated by 15 years of scandals involving past cover-ups of abusers in their ranks.

The Christian Brothers have withdrawn from running several schools that still bear their name and the order has had few recruits in Ireland in the past two decades. Other orders are down to a handful of members, and their bases are closer to nursing homes than active missions.

"Most of these orders will literally die out in Ireland within the next generation or so," said Michael Kelly, editor of the Irish Catholic newspaper in Dublin. "Many of them are already in wind-up mode. They lack the confidence even to seek new vocations (recruits), due to the stigma associated with their members' shocking, scandalous behavior."

The Irish government, which in 1999 apologized for its role in permitting decades of abuse and established the commission to nail down the full truth of the matter, has tried to use money to bring closure to the victims.

A government-appointed panel has paid 12,000 survivors of the schools, orphanages and other church-run residences an average of $90,000 each €” on condition they surrender their right to sue either the church or state. About 2,000 more claims are pending. Irish Catholic leaders cut a controversial deal with the government in 2001 that capped the church's contribution at $175 million €” a fraction of the final cost.

Some victims emphasized, even as they began thumbing through the report, that nothing €” not even criminal convictions of their long-ago tormentors €” will ever put right their psychological wounds and make their nightmares go away.

Tom Sweeney, who spent five years in two Christian Brothers-run institutions where he was placed for truancy, says he suffered sexual abuse and beatings. He also has bitter memories about more everyday humiliations €” such as being forced to wrap his urine-stained sheets around his neck and parade in front of other children when he'd wet his bed.

"It's something you'll never forget, the way you lived in these industrial schools," he said.

It's a funny old world innit!

NOT for the first time the "church" has actively, and knowingly supported child abuse (all facets).

Move on, nothing to see here.

          sukhumvitpoler,

I am... I went to a Christian brothers school (Australia but same shit) for 7 years and in every way it contributed to some really anti-social behaviour on my part later in life. Scared of my own shadow, so I would lash out at the slightest threat, real or imagined.... Still nothing 5 years of councelling and a flying leap out the closet (I love ladyboys, I'm GAY!) didn't fix...

So yeah, line 'em up, bend 'em over and bring on the pineapple cannon I say. Lets the cunts get some of their own back. Sadistic, rock-spider pricks.

Oz has already faced its own Christian Brothers scandal. I was even able to hear the very first complaint live on the radio.

One wet winter morning I was listening to the ABC on a discussion on what had happened to the children who had been sent to Australia as orphans in the care of the Catholic Church.

A frail voice came on the air, this old chap had rung the program to give his account of life growing up in a Christian Brothers home in Australia.

For the next 20 minutes he poured his heart out with the most appalling story of abuse & neglect.

That was the start of a major enquiry which ended with the condemnation of the evil bastards who masquaraded as men of god but were nothing more than sadistic child abusers.

The worst of them lived to hear his memory ruined but escaped justice by dying, how convenient. He had led such a double life that he had a stature erected in honour of his good works.

There is no trace of the stature today.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

God Bless the Christian Buggers - what a bunch of frigging Hypocrites.

I was raised a Catholic and now feel it is the most dangerous religion on earth. They preach purity etc, provide their brethren with hang ups, milk the poor and still advise NOT to use condoms. They should be Condomed.

I always try to understand and appreciate any religion - after all it is a philosophy but many drum it home like dogma. It works when you have a scared/uneducated mass but in this day and age I hope people see through the crap they push.

Gospels, Epistles and all religious books/teachings were a way to explain, in simple terms, complicated subjects. The problem was that they then actually believed their own myths/legends and 'hog tied' anyone who did not believe the crap they spurned out.

In this century we know that the world was NOT created in 7 days etc etc but how these religions still survive on teaching absolute jibberish is beyond me.

The Catholic Church has much to answer for - bullying, buggery and bad advice and wealthy.

Their whole power was based on fear and guilt and have over the years created more mayhem than good. Missionaries/Spanish Inquisition/Crusades - what damage have they caused and never an apology or admission of guilt. More recently so many bodies, within the church, have been disbanded - I wonder why.

Pope Benedict is living in the 1800's and still believes he can weave the mystical magic of the Roman Catholic Church - sad old bastard.

Can anyone imagine applying for a job where the pre-requisite is not to indulge in fornication?

They lost the plot in the middle ages and have yet to modernise enough. Attendance figures at their churches are so low we can expect more bowling alleys/cinemas/supermarkets.

Back to Pacman's excellent post - I also saw a program about the illegitimate kids in Liverpool being shipped off to Oz as late as the 1960's - only to be abused by their carers. They also denied any later effort, by the natural mothers, to trace their kids in later life - a bunch of sick bastards.....

PS I met a lady some years ago who admitted to a 20 year affair with a supposedly Catholic celibate Bishop. Oh yes he made her have an abortion to protect his own position - now that is true Christianity.

                      IMHO

Being basically a cynical old bastard (cries of No and Shame from the floor) I find myself innured to tales of woe by and large. Yesterday, driving home I had BBC Radio 5 on and this Irish guy explained what had happened to him as a child.

His stumbling delivery as though talking from far away as he detailed the systematic cruelty by the monks and the cover up by the authorities, made for a chilling few minutes of radio.

I am not ashamed to say I had to pull over as I could feel tears wellling up in my eyes. it was quite the most awful thing I have heard, this quiet resigned voice gone beyond anger or fear or any other recognisable emotion.

And the people who perpetrated this obscenity would regard us as perverts!

This was followed by the new Archbishop of Westminster who waffled away - the same old apologist for unforgiveable behaviour. No doubt in a few years we will be hearing about the next crop of poor bastards tortured at the hands of these monsters.

I think the film you were thinking off is "songs for a Raggy Boy "

Today most of the daily papers here have printed a small piece about the report and the abuse that went on.

read this piece from the Evening Hearld Christian Brothers apologise

For me, this is a sad day to be Irish and Catholic as i am embarrassed to be both

(seanbeag7 @ May 21 2009,19:56) For me, this is a sad day to be Irish and Catholic as i am embarrassed to be both
Don't be mate , that's down to the old original sin doctrine that they teach you from an early age , their crimes should be nothing for you to be ashamed of being Irish or Catholic .

The most shocking thing for me was that the church knew about the abuse that went on (and this went right up to the very top in the Vatican ) but chose to protect the instution of the church above the moral obligation to help the abused .

In every instance the Catholic Church closed rank , if a priest was caught abusing young boys he was simply moved on to another part of the country , with no one any the wiser .

One of the main roots of this problem is the totally unatural teaching of celibacy that is required of priests and nuns , along with the twin evil of teaching the lie that ALL sex is wrong and sinful , hence the abuser was free to abuse believing his sin was equal to say an unmarried couple having sex , or some kid masterbating in his bedroom , shocking stuff when you think this teaching has not improved over thousands of years .

Simply put forced celibacy must have been a hotbed for the frustrated would be abusers .

Look at the Catholic Church's stance on AIDs in Africa , again they believe that all sex is wrong and preach abstinence along with the lie that condoms actually spread AIDs , so millions go dying when all statistics prove that the use of condoms backed with sex education saves lives .
Free your mind and your ass will follow .

The Catholic church is FUCKING EVIL.
I am grateful to them for one thing though, even as a child I could tell that what they were telling me was such obvious BULLSHIT that I became an atheist at age 11.
I remember as kid, being overjoyed when our parents told us they were taking us out of catholic school and that we never had to go to church ever again if we didn't want to.
