  • First impressions of the Philippines

This is not a trip report. Others have already done that better and more graphically than I could. I just wanted to share my impressions of the Philippines on my first visit.

If you thought Thailand was a third world country, think again. Compared to the PI it is definitely a part of the second world. Although the reasons for this are surely debatable and contradictory; the Catholic hegemony, the Spanish and later American colonization, a culture of corruption, the PI 'feels' in many ways to be more a part of Central/South America than Asia.

Manilla seems to have 2 very different 'entertainment' areas, Makati and Malate.

Makati is pretty much all modern buildings, broad and clean streets and a price tag to match. The main attraction is the famous Burgos St, with the 'only' LB bar now apparently Mixed Nuts, but to be honest the thought of paying a barfine of 3500 pesos where the girl only gets 1000, did not motivate me to investigate. Like most other places in the PI, there is plenty of LB talent to be found hanging out at the malls. In Makati the evening hang-out is Greenbelt 3, a collection of bars and restaurants. Unaccompanied LBs are not welcome at the bars, so they tend to congregate at the Starbucks and other coffee-bars.

Malate in contrast to Makati is a busy, dirty and at times dangerous mix of old and new buildings. The hotels seem on the whole to be a little cheaper here, being close to the Manilla Bay means there is at least a chance of a cooling breeze but Malate's saving grace is that it has what passes as Manilla's version of Sunee Plaza. The weekends especially see the bars and clubs on Julio Nakpil, at the corners with Maria Y Orosa and Luis Maria Guerero Street, packed with gay guys and unsurprisingly in a country that equates transgender with gay, quite a few LBs. The local mall in this area is Robinsons Malate and, like almost everywhere else in the PI, late afternoon and evening brings prides of prowling LBs shopping, browsing or sniffing out their prey.

I stayed at two different hotels in Malate, Las Palmas and the City Garden Suites. The first was cheaper but had a grimy used feel to it. The safes at reception resembled a 1950s bank vault, complete with two keys to open the safety-box and at check-out the reception staff seemed quite insulted when I asked for an itemised mini-bar bill. The second hotel was a tad more expensive but a much better experience. Nice airy room, decent bathroom (complete with hose...quite a rarity in the PI) and friendly staff. Definitely worth paying a little extra for a better hotel.

After a few days I moved on to Angeles but due to my lack of interest in girlie bars I didn't even bother looking at the famous Fields Road. Not my cup of tea vicar.
Thanks to our very own laputanegra I had some introductions to a local and very lively group of her friends, so I spent an evening at a local music pub with surprisingly professional entertainment (the PI bands you've heard wailing Hotel California in LOS are definitely not the best the PI has to offer). Later we moved on to 'Auntie's Shop' where we proceeded to empty a crate of Red Horse (the beer that stomps you in the head with a hoof) from one communal glass. This is hanging out with the homies PI style! Cheap beer and ice shared freely amongst friends, sitting on plastic stools outside the local corner shop, cracking jokes and having fun till dawn. Delightfully simple but a great way to get to know new friends.
And yes, the mall at Angeles was yet again a veritable christmas hamper of LBs of all ages and sizes. Why bother with expensive bar-fines, escort agencies or dodgy back-street freelancers when there is so much talent roaming the local mall?

To round off my trip I needed a little R&R and everyone seemed to agree that Boracay was the place to go. 'Like Phuket' they all said. Thankfully not! The only things this small island has in common with Phuket are that they are both islands, have coconut palms and attract foreign visitors. The main drag on Boracay is a footpath that runs along the incredibly white and soft sand, the tuk-tuk mafia replaced by the pedal-trike drivers who in all honesty earn their fares pedalling over-weight tourists through the sand.

Boracay is divided into 3 'stations', with station 3 being the quietest and stations 1 & 2 having the bulk of the livelier bars and of course LBs. The island is so small that a trek all the way from station 1 to 3 takes little more than 20 minutes.
The beach is beautiful, relatively uncrowded at station 3, but the beautiful blue water was still a little cold in February. Never mind, I was usally sleeping to around sundown anyway. Rooms here like elsewhere in the PI are relatively expensive, but the cheap alcohol and cigarettes do kind of compensate when your main activity is drinking and sleeping.

This place is not full of LBs, but they are there, hidden away amongst the GGs at a lot of the bars. It seems that they try to masquerade as GGs, some very successfully and most seemed quite surprised when I outed them with my traditional LB greeting of tugging their cocks .
I had a lot of fun on Boracay but one very passable LB was the absolute highlight of this part of the trip. When I quizzed Trixie about how her unsuspecting 'boyfriends' reacted when they inevitably discovered that she was a girl with a bit extra, she smiled and said "they cry...he!he!he!"
Although the LBs here seem to focus on younger and better looking (and drunk) punters, they seemed both curious and relieved to be dealing with someone who was genuinely into LBs.

I ended my trip with 2 last nights in Malate (Manilla).
One in the delightful company of local BMs laputanegra and cancer 12 . Damn these girls know how to party! They are both fantastic sources of information and very entertaining and attractive companions for a wild night out in Manilla.

My last night I was fortunate enough to be joined by Nixie from Angeles who was kind enough to travel to Manilla for my last night in the PI.Yet another very very late night saw me ready to board the flight back to Bangkok in a semi-comatose state

Keep it coming. Fleeing. You manage to make the place seem worth a visit!

Great pics and good to read a PI first timers perspective.

                Just to round off with the more relevant information;
Hotels are relatively expensive, double the price of LOS, but it can pay to get a little more expensive place and enjoy the quality.
Food is pretty bland compared to other SE Asian countries and US style fast-food is everywhere. After a few days I was hungering for vegetables.
Taxis are a nightmare. DO agree a price for your trip and dont even discuss when the driver tries to coerce even more money out of you.
Malls seem to be the easiest place to meet LBs casually, but don't expect to be able to just offer money and trot off to your loom. Try offering a drink or some food first and get to know your prospective partner. Just cos they would like some money does not mean they are all hardened pros but there will also be rip-offs and druggies.
Do be very wary of LBs prowling dark streets. The likelihood of getting seriously ripped off by these girls is very very high.
Do try and make a few contacts through dating sites (ladyboykisses.com or dragoncastle.net) but run a mile as soon as they talk about 'problems' and 'feeling sad'.
In a country where it is the norm for alot of LBs to pay guys for sex, guys like us who actively look for LB companions are quite a novelty.
Alot of people are very very poor in the PI. Be aware of that and remember that with your pale skin you are easily identifiable as $$$$$. Some people will do anything to get hold of your $$$.

Any comments and corrections are very welcome. There are plenty of BMs who have been to PI several times, and a few who are based there. You all know so much more than me with just 8 days there. But hopefully this will make it a little easier for other PI newbies to make that first trip without getting stabbed, robbed or worse.

Thanks to Tan, Cancer and all the others for making my first trip so much fun. I will be back.

On Boracay, do they still hang out at Charlee's bar on the beach?  I brought a girl to Boracay for a few days but I discreetly got a number of a LB there one night, then met up with her the next day for lunch and a shag!  I think the lunch cost more than the shag.

(fleeing @ Mar. 03 2010,10:10) Red Horse (the beer that stomps you in the head with a hoof)
I love Red Horse. Have been known to knock back 10+ of those beasts in a good session. They are 6.9% and the 500ml stubbies for 30 peso each are the bomb. For a real kick try the Colt 45s at 7.2%.

The beer back in Oz doesn't do it for me anymore

Fantastic trip report by the way

                    -------------
                    edit: added

Just saw ur last part. I've been there several times and think you're pretty much spot on. Almost all of them are very poor. Even the few who work in call centers and make about $US 100 per week spend most on their family. To find a lb who has savings is a rare thing.

That said, nearly all of them will expect some financial help to one degree or another and I think it's only fair to compensate them for their efforts and expenses involved in going online etc.

The ones to keep away from are the ones who get straight into their problems, but you'll probably hear it sooner or later from any philippino lb. Just don't give if you don't want to train them to beg. If they are serious they will hang around.

Their culture regarding sharing is noticeably different to western culture. They will loan money amongst themselves all the time when a friend or family member is in need. It creates some problems, but that said, it is possible to make some great friendships / relationships with PI lbs.

This lending aspect of their culture, which is similar to some African and Aboriginal cultures is said by some economists to be the main reason for poverty in such nations. There is little incentive to save because of the social pressure to share your wealth. The other side of the coin is that there is not much guilt associated with expecting handouts from productive members of the family. This combination makes for an unproductive society.

                    Just some thoughts!

fleeing, fantastic posts, much appreciated.... the PI gets so little info her. It sounds like your connection with laputanegra was the key for your success.

I also felt very much like I was in some Asian section of Central America when I was there as well, but I've only been to some cities so far. Malate at night seemed like a drag to me, too dark, & all the waterfront entertainment & foodstalls had been shut down, sounds like they still are, too bad. Angeles was ok to visit once imho, Pattaya is infinitely superior for a pure mongering destination on all counts.

The rap on the PI apparently will always be about it's potential & how the society there seems to slowly unravel. But I met some really nice people & the beaches are great.

Fantastic report Fleeing, I shall be heading to PI myself, next month. It'll be my first venture there and this info is a huge help getting prep'ed.
