  • iPod Touch vs iPhone (What to buy in LOS?)

Does anyone have experience with both and what would be yr comments? I'm considering buying an iPod Touch when in Thailand next month. I'm going to Taiwan next but it seems to be more expensive there, just HK would be a bit cheaper but don't pass through this time.

The iPhone would be nice but it's a bit pricey and the question is whether I really need all the features - I have a phone and a camera, although some of the camera gimmicks would be neat.

I plan to use the touch mainly for videos - as my current iPod screen is a bit small, for pdfs, internet access, map feature and other fun stuff and the iPod classic for audio only.

Does anyone have a touch and are u happy with it or should I forget the touch and go straight for the iPhone???

Is it better to buy in BKK or are prices in Pattaya the same?

    Thanks and Cheers
    CM

Why would you buy one in Thailand?

Touch: cheaper, available upto 64gb, wifi only, very thin.
Phone: its a phone !, camera, video cam, gps, compass, 32gb max.

Normally when you get a phone, you get a phone/data plan with it. Buying in country X and using in country Z can be a problem since you need a phone/data plan in your country.

it's cheaper in Thailand than back home (Europe) and that is from the Apple online store - cheapest in HK about 270 Euro, Thailand 300, Europe 350!

Why Thailand? - cuz I'll be in Pattaya for a month and be able to play with it ...

Thanks Snick - yes, that is my prob. - the plan - I'll be in Thailand until end of Nov. then in Europe until end of Jan and back in China from Feb for about 6 months, then I don't know yet - so any kind of plan sucks ...

I have a small IXUS for quick camera and even video, the GPS and Compass might be nice but are they worth the difference???

I guess I can't really lose with the touch and buy a phone at some later stage ...

Why not Thailand? Via the Apple store, there is one near the PBR in Pattaya, the equipment should be original? And the OS is multilingual anyway ...

        Anything I'm overlooking?

I have a Touch, but mostly it's b/c I have a corporate phone that I get to use for free.

If you want to consolidate devices, then get the iPhone (unlocked of course). If you use it in Thailand, or even back home, the GPRS plans shouldn't be too bad and if you aren't picky, just using wi-fi to get data is ok too. The 3GS actually can be considered the first time its able to act as a multi-functional device in my mind. It makes calls just fine, but acts as a mini-computer to access the net with the best mobile browser their is. The camera, 3.2MP shooter, is very decent if you are just taking pics to upload here for TRs or making 8x6 prints, which I think covers most people. The VGA video recording is great too - you won't be able to make DVD quality movies, but for viewing on YouTube or even on your com they are decent. So if you really want to be able to make calls, surf the net, take pics and videos and just use one device, the iPhone is it!

How is surfing the net with a touch different than doing it with an iPhone? The touch offers net-access ...

Asked for the touch 64GB model yesterday at Siam Square and they are out of stock - in a week perhaps. They offered me an 8GB model - who would buy such a small storage one - why are they even around still?

Asked for the iPhone - also not have :-(

I have an 8gb Touch -- I always run out of space
Now I filled up my 32gb iPhone !

iTouch is wifi only, while iPhone can work on 3G and EDGE networks for data when WiFi is not available.

if you want an iPhone you have to go to a True store, not an Apple store.

Also I'm not sure if the 8gb model is 2nd gen itouch or the new 3rd gen.

An 8GB model is no option anyway given the price diff.
I could live with a 32GB but a 64GB would def be better.

I guess I'll skip the iPhone this time, not really that necessary and next year I might get a newer one and make Snick jealous ;-) 128GB, 6MP camera and what else could there be ...?

If Skype works, I'll be ok - thanks BP!

Snick, if yrs is full already, can you hook it up to an external mobile HD - I know this sounds silly but perhaps for data like movies u might not need on it all the time ...

Wonder why there is no option for adding an SD-card which would increase available space a bit ... next yr there should be a 64GB model. They probably hold back, so people buy phone and touch ...

There is no way to add external storage to an ipod/itouch, wish there were.
Skype is good for OUTGOING calls. You will need a headphone with a mike, those are 400+ baht.

Its inevitable that I will be bitching next June when the 4th Gen iPhone is out....but I have a two year contract, so I'll wait for the 5th Gen.

And there is always the mythical Apple Tablet.

Apple cleverly release updates incrementally (and very slowly) to force users to buy them over and over again.

The technology is already there to have 128 gigs of storage plus add on card storage plus decent camera, etc, but won't ever make them available until someone else does first or gets close to doing so.

I can't see the appeal of these handcuffed and locked down toys. They have so much potential but actually do fuck all.

                              You gotta be kidding...
Yes there are silly limitations, no SD slot, crippled bluetooth, expensive peripherals like video cables.
But to say it does fuck all is ridiculous, its a web browser, news reader, mailer reader, VNC client, music player, video player, dictionary, etc....
Not to mention tons of great games.
Everytime I use it I think 'wow this is so Star Trek'

And if wasn't Apple then who ?,
                              Microsoft ?, Zune really does crap all;
Nokia-amazing how they haven't made a device anywhere near as useful as an iPhone.
