    Thanks Bumpa!

@guythesoftie - thanks fella I appreciate the logic and welcome, you're not a dumbfuck you're just a very naughty boy! Now if I only knew what a rating actually meant I could dance round grumpy manarak and his lesser one

@manarak - I was being a bit tongue in cheek about Cascades, and cos you say so ill ignore the bad reviews and assume its the bestest ladyboy bar in the world ever ever ever! If I could work out how, my signature would now be saying "I don't deserve my rating please give it to manarak!"

@pacman - keep up the posting, not that you need me to say that, and thanks! Nice spot on the name!

@johnnydiver - haha thanks and ill tune up my repartee and counseling skills!

    Thanks chaps

ok, let's give that guy a rating of "1"...
after 3 posts, my opinion is now made!

I was being a bit tongue in cheek about Cascades
I didn't get it from your post - probably because I'm not a native English speaker...
I get only 50% of Jimbo's posts and about the same of Jimslim's jokes, LOL.

In my opinion the sword is merely metaphorical in this instance .

Perhaps it is the "fleshy dagger" that hovers ominously above his head

I was in Pattaya for five days and sat outside Blue Sky Bar between 12 midnight and 3AM most days. I has a fracas with some clown who instead of asking me to move my chair just pulled it out from under me, pretty dangerous thing to do eh!. He was completely out of his head .

Another idiot got bashed up for spraying the new year foam over some heavy duty biker dude and so on.. around three or four punch ups.. all pretty rough

Not surprising considering the amount of drunks that are around at the year end. ( this all took place before New years eve , i dont stay in Patts for that )

I agree with Pacman 100%. Maybe its just the new year clowns . As a rule i dont even go to W Street anyway, this time i was with an LB that works at the bar on and off hence the reason i was in situ.

Its a lot rougher than it used to be thats for sure.

Thanks TC. I am glad you didn't get injured yourself by the "chair-snatcher", some people just don't know how to behave.

My intention when I started this thread was to let first time visitors know that Pattaya wasn't all rainbows & lollipops.

Reading Trip Reports make it sound as if it is but over the past month I have read of 4 assaults on farangs in Pattaya while browsing other forums. And I wasn't looking for bad news.

And the recent PhuketNews website details lots of trouble in that part of Thailand.

I am not trying to deter anyone, I don't an argument with the guys who insist Pattaya is safer than home, I also feel quite safe while walking at night, I only want to highlight the potential for problems to guys who might otherwise think they are in Fantasyland.

It is a great place but among the population are drug users, lots of drunken tourists & many hungry girls angry at a lack of business who are known to take out their frustrations in very violent ways.

A little insight for those preparing to visit Pattaya. At least they can't say they weren't warned.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

In an either one or the other poll who is the more dangerous...... Farang, or Thai??

                  I'm voting Farang!

It seems that way. Its just the huge volume of idiots+ beer+ loud music+ other idiots. And to think there are whole families there with wife and kids entering the WS fray.. they must all be bonkers

If had kids i would be somewhere other than Pattaya

Beer and Tourists don't seem to mix, anywhere. I guess if you're not drunk yourself, you have a better chance of steering clear...except for the chair lifters perhaps

If the Thai Govt. is intent on promoting Patts as a 'family' destination, will be interesting to watch the clean up/gradual decline of the scene as we know it.

Of course it might all be a pipe dream and anyway, who will clean up the water, and the jetskiscammers, and..

And someone was telling me they market it a  Beach Resort to the Indians and Russians. What beach... that long disappeard amongst the concrete. They have fucked the place up no doubt about it but to us it dont matter i suppose.

The last time you could relax on the beach was circa 1975 when our Teutonic friends invaded en masse and took it over. Ocean View was the first hotel to be built and it was a lovely place. Now buried under the carbuncle know as the Mall.

Currently Pattaya is full of Indians, Iranians and Russians spending the square root of fcuk all in the bars and GoGo's. Infact the men folk from the sub continent just seem to walk around with their arms around each other observing what the rest of us get up to
I have noticed that the tailor touts never bother to hassle any Indians for a deal on a suit

Fair enough , but most casualties reported around here tend to be hearts and wallets as opposed to heads and limbs .

Then again those warnings always go amiss

Look it seems to me that the Gen Y yooth are generally more violent than their preceeding few generations, no doubt due to a host of things, including a fixation with youth and beauty, a prevalence of steroid abuse, desensitization via various medias including video games, Cage fighting and the like. We are following the good old days of the Romans, where violence is again becoming a spectator sport, and in particular for the young, disenfranchised and under and unemployed. In another thread "The Game" alluded to their rough treatment of ladyboys as well when they are customers.

The worlld had become more violent as have they.

                              So what to do?

Well as a 25 year veteran of waterfront bars world wide and brothel creeper of some repute, as well as being the owner of a big mouth and slow hands may I offer the following:

Generally speaking ( and I am assuming that the average age of this forum is 40+) they have no interest in assulting us old farts as there is no big cudoes in it for them. We are not threatening to their burgeoning masculinity.  Being the gray man and flying under the radar works. Fear stinks and is fuel for a bully.  Dont even give them a moments thought, just keep a weather eye on their foolish behaviour. This is just a personal opinion, but I have also found most young men, even pissed up foolish ones, are reasonably respectful and interested in knowing what we old codgers know. THis can be a useful tool.

Secondly don't get so rat arsed (yes, this is me saying this with a face thats seen more hits than Elvis) that you forget where you are, who you are and what your capabilities are.

Thirdly learn to REALLY read people.... some are stone cold killers, and most of us except the totally moronic can sense this. Be polite and step aside. The drug crazed and steroid abusers are equally well spotted, however unbalanced and irrational. If they walk in, pay the bin and walk out.

Lastly, in my opinion Patts is no worse than anywhere else. Any drama you are likely to encounter will be falang on falang, rarely thai on falang without good reason.

                              f0xxee

A very good precis thanks Foxxee. I can't fault your analysis & recommendations.

I also am alarmed at the raised level of violence we see in the world today. And you are spot on when you point the finger at the under & unemployed 'yoof' of today.

The ADD generation who are being given a leave-pass not to study at school because of their attention-deficit disorder. If ever an "illness" symbolised everything wrong with the times, this one does perfectly.

I digress. I concur with your advice to learn to read people, most people likely to cause trouble announce themselves from a distance or they have a particular body language that spells trouble.

I avoid them here in Australia & I walk around them in Thailand.

But it wasn't drunken farangs who prompted me to start this thread. It was a combination of my own observations & conversations I had with one of the volunteer tourist police.

I spoke to him at length over the time I was there last year & he related in gory detail every incident he attended where someone had been bashed. Often I saw him 2 or 3 times a night & he would tell me about bodies being carted off to hospital earlier & he would be racing to help the next victim. These conversations really opened my eyes as to the extent of the problem.

And it was almost exclusively Thais attacking farangs. And the attacks I witnessed myself were the same. Girls running up behind someone to bury a heel in some one's head mostly.

I don't want to labour the point. I don't get some vicarious thrill about reminding everyone that this happens. But after being on the end of a death threat myself, I found myself always looking over my shoulder, wondering who was around the next corner.

And then there were all the guys I took out for their first look around Pattaya, good blokes one & all, but hell, were they ever naive about what fate may befall them should they start arguments with the girls.

I had to explain in no uncertain terms that getting loud & angry over money, etc can only end badly for them. There is a right way & a wrong way to settle disputes in LOS & they must not expect satisfaction every time.

So I put it all in this thread & very carefully wrote the title so as not to get old hands upset. It is "New to the scene & coming to Pattaya?" Get tough or die. A little melodramatic perhaps but it has sparked some good debate.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.
