Why did you dedicate those Brummies from Slade to the Scots?

And I think a few of you are interpreting the word 'great' in this case to meaning "technical". 'Nevermind' is a seminal piece of work therefore Kurt, Dave and Krist will be considered 'great' by music theologians even if the playing is not 'technically' perfect.

And two more words. Charlie. Burchill.

ya, that usually puts the audience to sleep ....drum solo's also   yaaaawwwwwn

"new"  songs by "old" bands as well ....people are there to hear the classics

The bands I like for the most part don't even HAVE guitar solo's ......   but it's easy to notice  an extra-special guitarist when one comes along.   And I personally never really LOVED a lot of the people on the list but same as the other music-philes up here I know a really good Ax-man when I hear one.

No chicks on the thread!!    Save for Joan Jett {uggghhh}..... what about the cute and Blonde Wilson sister from Heart?? Not the fat one, she was a skag, but that cute little blonde who cranked out Barracuda and Magic Man? a Yank from Oregon

As my friend Stevie says;  "Chicks just don't look right driving a bike or playing a guitar"

Seriously have to disagree there....... Suzie Quatro in a tight pair of jeans playing a guitar......

                          Cosmic man

Some great guitarists mentioned here already , and a lot of different musical styles .

Ill just add two more to the mix , both totally different styles

                          George Benson - A fantastic soul/jazz guitarist

John Squire (Stone Roses ) - maybe not as technically accomplished as some already mentioned here , but a style of his own with those funky wah wah riffs - had me dancin like a tit that hot summer of 1989 , in flares and wearin a floppy hat

Great thread Buttafly - I love threads on music .

                            {'Happy Days' circa 1975 ..... I am strange also RR}

Stone Roses also have some cool sounds, same as Radiohead ....as I say, I like anyone who can do something different on their guitar and not just follow the crowd.

                                Good thread.

I tend to agree with buttafly's opinions, he pretty much nails it.

Thinking back over the many fantastic concerts I've seen & the music I've bought, I find most of my favourites have been mentioned.

The likes of Steve Howe, Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page, the Edge . . . I am sure I will remember some more.

And who can go past Alvin Lee's performance at Woodstock with his band Ten Years After doing his unbelievable version of Goin' Home?

If someone can dig it up from Youtube & post it I would appreciate it. I have never seen its equal.

But for favourites I can't go past Hendrix & Angus Young. Both could/can make their guitar talk.

When I was a younger man my mate & I would drop into a club during the week for a little socialising.

One Wednesday night they had a cover charge & after asking what it was for, we were told there was a new band playing who weren't bad.

We decided to risk it & went in.

My mate played a little guitar & said the kid on lead was the best he had ever seen. I know I was impressed.

We went back maybe 6 times paying the princely sum of $2 to see them. The place was never crowded, we stood about 2 metres from the stage, watched the boy in the school uniform perform magic night after night.

He is still wearing his school uniform . . . do I need to tell you the band was AC-DC, with their original & best singer, the late Bon Scott.

And I notice orgasmaddict has just posted his favourite is Jimmy Page.
Can you believe the same friend & I refused to pay $12 to see Led Zeppelin? It was a lot for us then, but we did sneak in later & can still recall Page & Plant bringing the house down.

$12 !! What did we know?
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.
